After a hugely physical encounter on Tuesday evening, M&C came close against a strong Barbarians side. To celebrate International Women's Day, the women's side took part in their second game against a Barbarians side mixed of women from Dorking, Old Caterhamians and a number of other clubs. Despite the scoreline, M&C certainly performed the more cohesive rugby, maintaining possession for large spells of the game and doing well defensively again some good runners.
It was however a few stand out players from the Barbarians that made the difference in the match. Whilst it was a very even contest, the barbarians had several very strong backs and whenever they had the ball, they looked threatening. M&C went in 0-15 at the first half - losing but certainly not down.
Despite a quick breakaway try early in the second half from the Barbarians, the second half was all Mitcham, the ball camped in the Barbarians 22' for pretty much the entire half. This was finally capitalised by M&C after several strong line breaks, Second Row Kirstie Friend found space and dove over the line to get M&C's first points of the game. The lead was again reduced by No. 8 Emily Harland-O'Connor, who scored with an immense run, swatting away several defenders in the process.
Despite not getting the win, the peformance was excellent and the side are coming on leaps and bounds. What a great way to spend International Women's Day!
M&C Women's first win is coming soon.
