Roll on the 18th September and what a time to be alive, competitive league rugby is back at Dewsbury Cottage for the first time in months. Even stranger, the sun has graced us with its presence in what was expected to be great day of rugby at our Presidents Day. As the old boys arrived and got the beers in, excitement began to rise to watch the 1XV bring home the win in their opening game of Surrey 4 against Old Hamptonians
Unfortunately, the 1XV didn’t get the memo of the expected win and started slower than Boris Johnsons reaction the global pandemic. Credit where credit is due, Old Hamptonians came out firing spreading the ball wide early and finding space with free-flowing running rugby. M&C headed into half time 14-0 with a lot of questions that’s needed answering. The one shining light from the first half was a more than dominant scrum which won multiple balls against the head.
The second half was a different story and fair more competitive. The forwards continued to dominate in the scrum and backs started to enjoy a bit of ball in hand. Tries from Chris Gilbert, Patrick White and Dan James unfortunately weren’t enough to initiate the comeback as Old Hamptonians continued to break through in a very open match. With the score finished 19-36 at the close of play, M&C will look to put this right at the return fixture.
Tries: P. White, G. Gilbert & D. James
Cons: P. Jones
